10 Religious Rituals & Traditions and Their Spiritual Meaning

Here are 10 everyday religious rituals that actually have a deeper, spiritual significance. Eastern and Western rituals explored spirituality.

Have you ever stopped to think why religions and societies around the world have promoted superstitions? Perhaps because when fables and fear-mongering stories came into existence, most people couldn’t comprehend the science behind these religious rituals and traditions.

Instead of teaching us why something is genuinely good for us, we’ve been fed fear to ensure we don’t do the opposite. The intention was right, but the method has become outdated.

In today’s day and age, we question EVERYTHING. We want logic, and we want science to back something before we can trust it. Unfortunately, we now discredit genuinely sacred rituals, because we no longer understand their importance.

And therefore, don’t find a need for them to be done.

So now, I want to throw some light on the spiritual nature of many day-to-day religious practices. I hope to inspire you to start doing them more seriously, knowing why they matter.

#1 – The tradition of burning incense sticks, camphor or lighting a candle at the alter.

In a traditional Hindu family as mine, we light a diya.

The spiritual essence behind such religious rituals, you ask?

We are Love and Light, as the saying goes. So lighting a candle is an extension of spreading our light in the physical dimension, thus omitting the darkness.

And if you’re familiar with the five elements of nature – earth, water, fire, air & ether; then burning incense sticks and camphor are ways to cleanse the energy of our surroundings at an ethereal level.

#2 – The tradition of folding hands, bowing down at temples, and touching elders’ feet.

The two deepest forms of humility are begging, and bowing down infront of others.

These small gestures are about acknowledging and honoring the Divine being infront of us. Once you do this, you omit any ego and resentment in the relationship.

Another metaphysical aspect to this, is preserving one’s energy. When we physically mingle with our surroundings, touching other people and objects, we create a ripple in our own energy.

That’s why renunciates like monks and sages are seen as reserved and withdrawn from human touch. They’re limiting the creation of new karma that occurs mingling or touching.

#3 – Ceremonies and rituals to remember our ancestors.

Religious gurus and pundits have made death a business. There are countless demands for providing clothes, food, footwear and whatnot for the pandit’s family. Apparently, our ancestors get that food and protection through them. Of all the religious rituals, this is perhaps the most strange ones.

Because the spiritual significance is quite different.

Firstly, our ancestors have karmic bonds with the family, which we can help lift through prayer and service to their souls, especially at the time of their death. It helps them move on. Sadhguru’s book, Death goes into deep, deep introspection on the many rituals around dying.

But this doesn’t mean they need food and shelter. After all, why would a soul that’s outside the body have human needs?!

Second, after passing away, our ancestors also help us preserve the lineage from the spiritual realm, which most of us aren’t even consciously aware of. So to appreciate their tireless efforts and express gratitude, ceremonies have been created.

And third, it also helps loved ones and the departing soul accept that their time together is over in this lifetime. It brings a comforting closure for everyone, because we’ve bid someone farewell with utmost love and respect.

#4 – Religious fasting.

Well, fasting isn’t religious at all, I realized.

Though done in the name of dharma, traditions like not eating rice on a full moon, observing a complete fast during the eclipse, or disposing any leftover food during such an eclipse all have spiritual significance.

Science too is beginning to honor all this. I find this explanation a great introduction to all this.

#5 – Dhyan. Zen. Meditation. Whatever you want to call it.

There are many people that don’t Meditate, because they believe it’ll take them away from their religion. But there’s absolutely nothing religious about meditating!

Back in the day, wise sages were said to Meditate for years on end and acquire special powers. But they weren’t special! Meditation is a powerful tool to become self-aware and gain sense of the infinite wisdom within.

We don’t need to go to sages to get their blessings, which they acquired from said practices. We can equally manifest that for ourselves and become powerful creators of our lives.

#6 – Yoga.

While a part of the world is going crazy by remixing yoga with other exercise forms, and trying to keep the practice exciting for the masses, the one thing Spirituality taught me is that yoga isn’t about poses.

It is the art of becoming in absolute alignment with your body. It’s about yog, or union within.

This works in beautiful harmony with meditation because while meditation is oneness with self at rest, yoga is oneness with self in motion. Ofcourse there are various types of yoga asanas, but the essence is far deeper and sacred than we can imagine.

I haven’t attained that yog yet, but I’m getting there, one suryanamaskar at a time!

#7 – Prayer.

I used to wonder, what’s the point of praying? Until chanting the Lotus Sutra literally manifested meeting my now husband overnight.

#8 – Ringing the bell/gong at temples.

As a Hindu kid, I enjoyed when my parents would lift me and help me ring the huge temple bells. What’s the essence of this tradition?

Sound Vibrations are known to move away stagnant energy, and are a powerful way to clear the energy of a space. This is also explained in great detail by renowned western energy clearing teachers such as Denise Linn.

#9 – Traditions to honor food.

Christians offer a prayer of thanks for every meal on their table. Hindus have festivals like Lodhi which give thanks for the sucessful winter harvest.

Another noteworthy religious ritual, is offering food to God, called prasadam. The tradition goes that you aren’t allowed to waste the food now, because it’s blessed by God. And in old times, it was a practice to offer every meal to God.

Thereby minimizing any form of food wastage.

Such food is still served in temples today, which ISKON devotees call ‘feast’ and Sikhs call langar.

Lately, I’ve been thanking the grains that go in my belly, for they’ve crossed fields, farmer’s hands, markets and my mother’s loving hands, before they reached me 🙂

#10 – Using precious stones, gems and crystals for energy protection.

Latest to my list of realizations, is the value of healing minerals and crystals.

It was after I bought my own Rose Quartz crystal, and my heart started pounding every time I sat to meditate with it, that I realized – these things do have some powerful vibrations!

My understanding was deepened further once I read Autobiography of Yogi by Paramhans Yogananda, in which there was an elaborate discussion of wearing stones and amulets to rid oneself of sickness (or even death….woah).

Closing Thoughts

My grandmother always tells me, that our saints were highly evolved beings which created the ancient scriptures for us, but we didn’t take care of them.

And to extend her thought, it is my belief that now our knowledge is expanding across the globe. Divine Intervention for sure, in hopes for survival and preservation of humanity.

This isn’t just true for Hinduism. Think about the Dalai Lama spreading his works in the western countries. Or the suppresion of Tibetan Monks and their migration to other countries, thus bringing awareness.

Think of all the other Tribal and Native folk that are tirelessly working to keep the flame burning for their ancient traditions.

I’m sure every religion was made for a purpose that was profound, but over the centuries, has been tampered and contaminated.

So, I encourage all my readers to dive deeper into their respective religions and rediscover the Light that can help everyone’s spiritual evolution. 🙂

7 Effective Journaling Ideas for Self-Healing

How different journaling types can help you heal, how to journal effectively, how long it takes, 7 journaling ideas, and numerous other writing prompts!

My first attempt at journaling was awkward. Back in 2012, my journal entries looked plain jane, because I never knew what to say. And the cliche “dear diary” was amusing because I didn’t believe in the idea of talking to an inanimate object.

I share this to reassure you how peculiar such one-on-ones with ourselves, can be at first! Nevertheless, the 2012 version of me persevered long enough. And now, most of my solutions come from ‘writing it out’. And yours’ can too.

Whether you already enjoy journaling and just want some new ideas, or would like a more closer look at how journaling can help you, here are the 7 methods I practice and recommend.

NOTE : two of the techniques, #4 and #7 are developed by yours truly. So if you try them out, you let me know your experience! 🙂


Why you should do it : more joyous living, acceptance towards reality, retraining your mind from pessimism to a more optimistic mindset

Time it takes : 2-5 minutes, your choice

How To Do Gratitude Writing Effectively

Pretty straightforward, so this makes a great journaling practice for beginners. I consider this a journaling practice for the lazy ones, like me, because you can do it snuggled in bed!

So, at the end of every day, unwind, get into your pyjamas, and take out time to write down 5 or more things that you’re grateful for. If you can’t think of much, don’t forget the basics such as good food or clean drinking water. Eventually however, you’ll be able to recognise the more finer miracles of life.

A great tip is to keep the journal next to your bed so you can remember to use it!

My Experience with Gratitude Writing

I started back in 2013, inspired by Lindy Tsang, who would end her day with Gratitude pages. Ofcourse, I was never that consistent, but I started seeing results immediately.

Even as life is busier and I’m juggling a lot more than my college self, I still try to write gratitude at least once a week. Over the years, this simple practice has helped me see each day for the good that comes from it, not just the bad.

Why you should do it : retraining the brain to change your deep-seeded behaviours, setting intentions for the future-you that you want to create

Time it takes : upto 15 minutes

Recommended frequency : everyday, at least for a few months

Best time of day : mornings

How to do Future-Self Writing Effectively

Future-Self journal comprises of a list of 7 quick questions to help you reflect on the habit you’re trying to change. I’d recommend checking out Dr. Nicole Lepera’s website, The Holistic Psychologist. She’s the one who created this method.

She provides a free downloadable template and an elaborate description on her blog with examples! She is also the creator of Reparenting Journaling, which is a compliment to Future-Self but can be done on its own too.

My Experience with Future-Self Journaling

I was quite influenced by this Instagram famous psychologist, and became acquainted to her work in the summer of 2019.

Through the Future Self Journaling Practice, the first issue that I started working on was abandonment. As I progressed, I realized how different day-to-day actions and behaviours reflected my abandonment wounds. Another area that I was able to transform, was to start living more joyously and less seriously.

A few months down the line when she shared her reparenting guide, I added that to my morning routine and it really gave a boost to my inner child work.


Why you should do it : great way to vent mindless thoughts; become more creative and free; discover inner blocks and learn to be honest with ourselves; finding solutions to problems through automatic writing;

Time it takes : 20 minutes or less, your wish

Recommended frequency : everyday, continued practice

Best time of day : morning if you want to vent and clear your head so that you can focus on your tasks; but evening works great too if you want to purge your emotions from the day and not take them to bed.

How to write Morning Pages Effectively

This technique is recommended by Julia Cameron in her book, The Artist’s Way.

The modern way to practice the pages is to use a digital diary. As in, if you’re too lazy or out-of-touch with the habit of writing by hand, keep a Word document on your laptop to spill your thoughts.

Whatever your choice of format, the intention is to be able to write our thoughts everyday, for about 3 pages (or less, your choice) without holding ourselves back.

Also, two rules apply – don’t go back and read it, and do NOT let anyone else read it either. You are doing this activity so that you can let these thoughts out of your mind, and process them into healthier thoughts.

At times, you may find yourself expressing gratitude to the things that have happened to you, or in contrast, start thinking about an old fight with a childhood friend that you never got closure on.

You may even start digging into your hidden desires and ambitions. Every and any thought is fine – you just have to persist through 3 pages to make sure your mind is cleared out largely.

My Experience with Morning Pages

I started in June 2019. The pages give me a newer sense of clarity to problems that I originally suppressed. But for me the biggest win, is that writing morning pages consistently for a few months helped me clear my writer’s block.

The blog started in 2018 and only had 4 or 5 posts. I closed 2019 with 43 blog posts. And at any given point of time, I’m ready with several weeks of content written in advance.

I can’t recommend this technique enough, especially if you’re a struggling writer!


Why you should do it : healing your relationships by getting closure, letting go of resentment, working towards forgiveness and so forth

Time it takes : atleast 10-15 minutes

Recommended frequency : whenever you feel angry, resentful or bitter about somebody (including yourself), sometimes you might want to continue for a few days regularly writing towards one specific person

How to write unsent love letters effectively

When you reflect on some of the past arguments you’ve had with important people in your life, you may often feel like the problem wasn’t even worth fighting about. So many times, it’s just a difference of opinion. But in that moment, things got heated up anyway.

What if you could write a letter to yourself, on behalf of this important person? What would they say to you? Here’s an example.

“I know I hurt you when I said/did x-y-z. But my intention wasn’t as such. I only wanted to express my truth. I did this because at the time, it felt necessary and right for me.

I’m truly very sorry that you were effected so much by what happened between us. I wish well for you and want you to know that from one soul to another, I love you.”

Do you know how difficult it is to put ourselves in somebody else’s shoes when we’re mad at them?

I know, I know. You have your reasons. But forgiveness and compassion isn’t even necessary around people that don’t hurt us in the first place.

And we need to learn how to forgive people even if we don’t get an apology.

We need to learn how to forgive through the people that affect us the deepest. That’s where true healing lies for ourselves. So really, this has nothing to do about them. It’s about giving yourself the closure and peace of mind you deserve.

Once you’re done writing that latter, store it away for a day. And come back and read it again the next day, as though they really wrote it to you. Then check-in with yourself, how do you feel?

The objective isn’t to fix the relationship, but as a consequence if that happens, that’s great!

My experience with writing unsent love letters

Writing a letter to myself on someone’s behalf helps me hold space for both of our perspectives and feelings without judgement. And it encourages me to close the loop by forgiving and moving back into a space of loving kindness.

#5 – Inner Child Healing

Why you should do it : for self-awareness, strengthening your relationship with yourself, and deepening self-love

Time it takes : 10-15 minutes

Recommended frequency : a couple times a week, or as often as you feel inclined to connect with your inner child

How to do Inner Child Journaling Effectively

There are a variety of journaling methods and the one technique I believe works well when you’re just starting off, is to sit with one of your childhood pictures. Even better if you have personal belongings still stored, like favorite clothes, old games or that cute blanket from when you were 5.

As you spend a couple minutes getting into the energy of that memory, it becomes easier to talk to the younger version.

Ideally, you should try inner child journaling, as through you are still a child. Ask simple questions, and try answering them with simplicity.

I’ve been working closely with several adults to help them reconnect with their inner child. Over the span of a week filled with delicate exercises, you can start building that relationship too. You can read more about this digital workshop here.

My Experience with Inner Child Journaling

Very quickly, inner child healing became integral in my Spiritual growth. I had started with Past Life Regression and having understood the essence of self-hypnosis, I gradually uncovered many current life subconscious wounds.

Whether it was overcoming guilt for my health, or coming to terms with my abandonment issues, journaling helped me transform my relationship with myself.

#6 – Shadow Self Journaling

Why you should do it : to reevaluate your unconscious behaviors and patterns and admit difficult but critical truths about yourself, a complimenting modality to ‘light’ work.

Time it takes : actual journalling time can be a few minutes, but the introspection can run quite deep and stretch over days to come!

Recommended Frequency : once a week when you’re getting started, use in compliment to other lighter journaling techniques like gratitude writing

How to do Shadow Self Journaling Effectively

This introspection is recommended for people with a reasonable sense of self-esteem and the ability to critically self-evaluate without letting it bring themselves down. At a certain point in your healing, you will start feeling ready for this.

A great way to get into shadow self journaling, is to use prompts to provoke yourself into shadow work. I thoroughly enjoyed Jo Rowyn’s Instagram story prompts for several weeks, and later found her free download beneficial too. It set things into motion for me.

Best practices for shadow work include

  • setting realistic expectations with yourself,
  • reminding yourself that nobody is perfect and that everyone has a shadow self.
  • be there by your own side to continually forgive yourself and say, “now that I know better, I’ll do better”.

It’s vital that this modality uplifts you, not put you down. And that’s only possible when you work on other areas of healing and build yourself up first.

My Experience with Shadow Work

My cheeks always flush when I’m confronted by my own shortcomings. The shadow self tends to hide, to play blame-games and when you corner the shadow, it can almost feel embarrassing.

But the truth is, only when you put light on the shadow, is when it stop being a shadow and can be transmuted. Shadow work has now become a deeper part of my journey, and I continue to peel off layers, like an onion!

Why you should do it : more present moment awareness, more joyous living, more conscious living and better sleep.

Time it takes : 10-20 minutes (depending on your dedication)

Recommended frequency : everyday, for a month or two, or until it becomes an ingrained habit to reflect and release your daily thoughts

How to do Awareness Journaling Effectively

I created this method because I wanted to heal myself one day at a time without carrying it forward anymore. I no longer wanted to sleep angry.

At the end of your day, once again, in your pyjamas and snuggled up in bed, start reflecting on the following questions.

  • What significant events happened today that were out of the ordinary?
  • How did each event make me feel?
  • For negative events – how can I release the emotion so it doesn’t carry on to tomorrow?
  • What are any other thoughts, behaviors or patterns from the past that arise from today’s events, that I can now feel and heal?

There will atleast be 3 things that sparked happiness or some kind of emotional response in you. Allow yourself to replay it in your head, but this time evaluating it from your heart.

Is Awareness Journaling Effective?

I keep this last, because it’s like a sum of all the fore-mentioned techniques, and then some. I believe this is where some of the deepest sense of inner healing can happen, when you start working on a daily basis to clear the mental gunk.

Why does it work?

Well, when we sleep, a part of our sleep cycle called REM, Rapid Eye Movement helps us process the events of our day. We often wake up with strange dreams – most of the times, this is our mind stacking up the information from the past days.

As a side note, I do believe that dreams can reveal many wise secrets of the subconscious and super-conscious, but that’s a conversation for another time.

Anyway, as I was saying! It takes several days to fully integrate events into our system, that too only IF we get proper 8 hours of sleep. Otherwise, events may not even fully register into our memory! Nervous? I know. Personally, I don’t get enough sleep either.

Plus, we are so checked-out all the time, we are rarely in the present moment. Infact, sometimes, notice how people say “I’ll sleep on it”?

It’s as if we know, that we aren’t able to process our thoughts properly in wake-state, and thus we leave it to the subconscious to handle after we’ve put the conscious to sleep.

I believe that there’s a way to reduce the aforementioned gap between what happens in life and how long we take to actually process it, to a large extent, by just being able to spend a couple minutes consciously processing our life.

You might not be very ‘in the moment’ around the clock, but you can still sum up your day’s events, by being tuned in, at the end of every day, with the simple act of writing the highlights of your emotions, in a journal.

Bonus: Journaling for Enlightened Living

Over the past couple of months, the idea of Silent Retreats has really impressed me. And as I began observing hours of silence every week, I started asking myself the no-BS questions to recalibrate my pace and direction on this spiritual journey.

Through journaling on these prompts, I’ve been able to bring back my focus towards walking on the path of enlightenment.

If enlightenment sounds too far-fetched or overwhelming for you, just focus on walking on the path of peace. Put in sincere effort to practice silence, self-reflection and move inwards, to attain lasting inner peace.

Concluding Thoughts

I recommend trying all the techniques and really experimenting in this area of self-healing before deciding whether or not you pursuing journaling as a regular healing modality.

No healing is linear, neither is it instantly gratifying. So, sincerely try one technique for atleast a week, and see how it makes you feel.

If you feel the motivation to keep going on day 8, you’ll know it’s worth pursuing. But before the 8th day? Just plug away and put in the work, without judgement or opinion!

Shadow Work : Everything You Need to Know, By Jo Zurita

What is shadow work? What are shadow aspects? What are some tips, steps & examples of effective shadow work practices? And more.

“What exactly IS shadow work?” I asked Jo. Her response led to a much deeper insight on the topic, which she was kind enough to put together for us here.

An Introduction to Your Shadow Self

I cannot tell you how often I get this question! It’s probably my favorite one to answer, though, since it’s something I’m massively passionate about and one of the things I find to be the most misunderstood.

In short, Shadow Work is about looking at our traumas and whatever that which we have repressed, in order to begin the healing process, grow and write new stories about ourselves.

It’s about asking yourself where in life can you take accountability and not let these things control you negatively any longer.

Shadow refers to the root cause of unhealed unresolved negative emotions we hold around childhood/generational experiences (which have grown and compounded over time).

And, Work refers to the time and effort we invest into the techniques and practices that assist us in healing our Shadows; whether it be meditation, prayer, journaling, therapy, EFT, better structure and foundation in our daily lives, movement, singing, teaching…or a combination of all these things and more!

What Are Shadow Aspects?

Shadow aspects are things we don’t share freely with others, things we are ashamed of, things we don’t like about ourselves, negative things that happened to us in the past (hurt/trauma), things we were shamed for and have since repressed.

When we look at the Shadow aspects of ourselves with love, understanding, acceptance and forgiveness we are able to truly love ourselves fully, we are able to to gain new insight and perspective on these things in order to write off the old story in exchange for a new, more positive outlook on things.

Imagine for a moment that you have a gorgeous, lush garden; one that you worked REALLY hard to grow and cultivate. Say you notice some weeds growing in your garden so, naturally, you pull them up.

Well, what happens when you don’t pull weeds up by their roots? They just grow right back. Shadow work is very much the same.

You can acknowledge and take accountability for your Shadows but if you aren’t taking the ACTION to work on them and get to the ROOT of it all, and heal it, then it’s just going to keep resurfacing.

This is part of why Shadow Work is so necessary in order for us to truly love and accept ourselves unconditionally.

How Do I Do Shadow Work?

Our Shadows create blocks. And these blocks come between us and the life we want to live, like

  • Between the goals and dreams we want to achieve,
  • the loving and healthy relationships we want to have with ourselves and others,
  • things we want to manifest in our lives, the list goes on…

The payoff of shadow work is regaining your confidence, achieving transformation, healing and learning to love yourself for who you actually are. It’s truly the ultimate act of light work, and deepest form of Self Love.

Action is paramount because it’s what separates an idea from reality.

Step-Wise Actions To Take For Shadow Work

The first step is awareness.

When you feel triggered rather than get upset notice what it was that triggered you. This is a golden opportunity to figure out where the trigger first started.

Instead of shutting down when the triggers arise, speak to them with empathy, kindness and compassion. Think of your past self, the one who experienced the pain or trauma, your present self can give that past version the support they needed when the experience happened.

We spend so much time waiting for others to validate our experiences that we never take the time to validate OURSELVES. It sounds crazy, but sometimes talking to your trauma and inner child like you’re talking to another person works WONDERS.

Ask why they feel afraid or angry, ask why they’re showing up now and how you can help.

The next step, or if you feel silly talking out loud, is to write.

Write down what’s coming up. Then write down what memories you have about those things, go back in time as far as you can, noting all the things that reinforced the Shadow aspect/trigger you’re working with.

Was it a thought or belief that someone else instilled in you?

Once you’re finished with the writing exercise, look it over. Is there anyone that you can forgive even if, and especially if, it’s yourself?

Forgiveness is also an important factor in Shadow Work. Remember, forgiveness isn’t about the other person, it’s about our own peace of mind.

If you have a forgiveness list, go ahead and say it out loud if you feel called. A simple, “I forgive you” really does help.

Example of Shadow Work

Now, if your Shadow Work is around a belief, for example, you can then go in and choose to write a new belief in place of the old one. I’m going to give you an example Shadow Working session.

The belief is: There is never enough, don’t ask for more.

Once we have that belief written down, we’ll write out all thoughts, feelings and memories around it. Then we want to work on restructuring that belief into something positive.

So, for example, we would write: How can I see this differently?

  • I choose to see that my family was trying to be protective and try to help me understand the value of hard work.
  • I choose to forgive.
  • To release these old stories because I know they are untrue.
  • They are not my fault.

We are then able to turn those old stories and beliefs into something new, look at them from a different angle than we were looking at them before.

Tips To Keep In Mind While Doing Shadow Work

There is a lesson to be learned in all of the experiences we have been though. It’s important to remember that life happens FOR you, not TO you.

The focus and purpose of Shadow Work is healing. Healing is going to come from anyone or anywhere but inside of you, which is why putting in the work is important.

#1 – Don’t Overwhelm Yourself.

Pick one topic and write on that, then give yourself some time after the purge to get grounded and centered in your new beliefs.

#2 – Don’t Let Self-Judgement Get To You.

It’s not always easy to look through a lens of compassion or acceptance. And it’s even more difficult to take accountability but it’s something that, with practice, will completely change your perspective.

One way to be observational if you are having a hard time moving out of being emotional and self judgmental, is to dissociate from the memory – basically to see the memory as though you are watching it on a television screen. It helps us to get out of our emotions and into a less judgmental place.

#3 – Stay Aware Of Your True Power.

Remember, you are the creator of your reality. You have the power to CHOOSE. Stand in your authority; no matter how much of it you feel like you’ve lost or let go of over time, it will always belong to you and you can call it back whenever you decide.

You have control over the one thing that matters the most, yourself.

Concluding Thoughts

It’s important to take your time with shadow work. It’s something we continually do throughout life, and something you’ll get better and better at the more you do it.

Patch, Stone, Facade, Repair, Setting

While your emotions are important throughout this work, it’s just as important to remember not to get stuck in them, rather, focus on the NEW beliefs and emotions that are coming from the healing work that you’re doing.

Know that you are whole just as you are, even when it seems like you couldn’t possibly put the pieces back together and that you will forever be broken, you are whole just as you are. Always.
