For a long time, I’ve had the sense that there must be a spiritual connection, some sort of otherworldly contract with the land and waters around us. And on my recent birthday, a deeper sense of clarity hit me! I’m so excited to share my experiences with you. Let’s dive right into this juicy and mystical topic.
On the eve of my 32nd birthday, I went to Whistler with my husband and baby. For some reason, that entire morning, a crippling anxiety and a sense of doom had been lingering over me. Nothing specific had triggered it, but my body felt heavy. So, after we checked into our room and I put my baby down for her nap, I lay down beside her, trying to ease my nervous system through one tool after another.
And then, something profound happened.
In the quiet, I heard a voice in my head— ancient, wise and kind. He said:
“You are so supported and welcomed on this land.”
It felt like a guardian was watching over this land and the people who visited it. And now, over me too.
The moment those words landed in my mind, my anxiety melted away. A wave of safety and love flooded over me.
That single moment opened a door to a much larger realization: the land itself can hold us, welcome us, and even guide us.

Speaking to the Spirit of the Land
One of my favourite spiritual practices while travelling is upon landing at my destination, whispering to the land:
“Thank you for allowing me to visit. Please be kind to me. Please let this visit be filled with grace.”
Usually, I don’t hear anything back, but I get a felt sense that I’m being “allowed” here and that I have a personal responsibility to tread these spaces with respect. But this Whistler moment was different. It was a spiritual gift with a much deeper connection to the spirit of the land.
Here’s what it also unlocked for me. On the drive back home, I began noticing the mountains more vividly. Each range felt different:
- Some peaks stood in solidarity, quiet and at ease, and driving across them felt peaceful.
- At first glance, some seemed isolated, like lone islands, and as my eyes would scan their physical structure, I’d find that they indeed are little islands along the Sea-to-Sky Highway.
- And then there were the loud and alive peaks, which seemed like they had a lot to say. Upon closer look, they were physically confined by nets to shelter us from rocks and landslides.
A humbling spiritual awareness began to settle in – mountains, forests, and rivers have their own intelligence. An ancient spirit within each of them gives life to these spaces. They’re not just silent backdrops; they, too, are participants in this consciousness.
Accelerated Spiritual Growth on New Land
When I moved from India to Vancouver, my writing and coaching work suddenly blossomed after years of feeling stuck.
In many traditional stories, there’s a belief that crossing water can restore blocked energy—that certain lands hold us back, while others help us thrive.
My parents and grandparents would also share stories about how businesses might flourish in one location but fall apart when moved, even just a few blocks away.

All hinting towards a common theme – there has to be something spiritually binding us to the places we live, work and visit.
Caveat: This isn’t to say that we don’t have free will. But perhaps, just like soul contracts, there are spiritual land contracts. Agreements we hold with specific places that shape our growth, healing, and opportunities.
A Client’s Story
A few years ago, I worked with a client who felt stuck in her home. The house was draining her—constantly breaking down, demanding repairs, bleeding her dry financially and emotionally.

In an intimate spiritual process, we connected with the spirit of the house. To her surprise, the house spoke:
“I’m the only real house left on this block. Everything else is being converted into commercialized lots. Please protect me. Please preserve me.”
The spirit of the house and of the land beneath it craved for a deeper care and attention than what their future held. And this had thus become an energetic tie holding my client back from moving on.
Once she recognized it, she set the intention to release herself from this binding. Due to unforeseen circumstances, soon after this session, I unfortunately lost contact with her and don’t know if she ever managed to move out of there, but this revelation brought her great clarity and relief in that moment.
I’ve had a couple of other similar fascinating sessions with clients who are struggling to sell their house or buy the right one. There is definitely something deeper worth exploring here when it comes to such energetic stuckness!
Land as a Spiritual Teacher, Land as a Soul Guide
The more I reflect, the more I see how deeply land can shape us. We’re often drawn to specific geographies—mountains, deserts, oceans—often times without knowing why.
As an example, I feel a deep pull towards places such as Jodhpur and Udaipur in Rajasthan, India, as if there’s unfinished business there from my past lives. I’m not sure what would change if I ever visited, but I do know that every time I’ve tried to plan a trip there, it’s gotten cancelled!
So, I leave this as an open invitation for you:
- Have you ever felt welcomed—or unwelcome—by a land?
- Has your success shifted after moving to a new place?
- Do you feel inexplicably drawn to certain places?
I’d love to hear your stories in the comments. Perhaps, together, we can piece more evidence of these mysterious and beautiful spiritual land contracts.
